AFE's volunteer program offers a more extensive experience to those who are interested in serving for a longer period of time. Our staff is made up mostly of Hondurans from the local community who will play a long-term role in the children’s lives. However, AFE’s international volunteers are also indispensable to its work.

They bring a global perspective to AFEs students and help them to think bigger than just

their garbage dump community.

The purpose of the short-term volunteer program at AFE is to give its participants a deeper experience working first hand with the children and families of the garbage dump, with the hope that our volunteers become life-long advocates for children trapped in poverty.

At AFE, we enjoy hosting international volunteers so that they may come to know the poor. They typically live with a Honduran host family in a poorer community near the garbage dump, and spend their time developing deep relationships with the children at AFE.
