WHAT DOES MY SPONORSHIP DONATION PROVIDE?
In a country where the average academic level is the 6th grade, your sponsorship donation provides an education for children from the garbage dump through high school. It helps pay for a Honduran teacher’s salary, school supplies, and uniforms (for the older children). Families from the garbage dump typically eat one meal of rice and beans a day (and whatever else they can find in the trash during the day). Children at AFE are provided with a full nutritious lunch, with meat and fresh fruits and vegetables. Another problem in the garbage dump community is the fight for positive role models. If someone can get out, they typically do not come back, leaving a void and a desperate need for leaders. AFE’s Christian teachers and staff mentor children from the garbage dump and help them to have big dreams for their future. Garbage laborers make, an average, one dollar a day. They live day-to-day and it is very hard to save for their future. If a crisis occurs (such as injury or illness, or threats from gangs), garbage-scavenging families are in a particularly precarious situation. AFE provides crisis support for families who find themselves with nowhere else to turn.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I MAKE MY FIRST DONATION?
After AFE receives your first donation, you will be sent your child’s profile and picture by email. You can then begin communicating with your child by email. Please send all emails to firstname.lastname@example.org and write the name of your child in the subject line. A volunteer at AFE will help translate and facilitate communication.
CAN I CHOOSE WHICH CHILD I WOULD LIKE TO SPONSOR?
In the “Comment” section, you may write your first and second preference for children you would like to sponsor. Or you can simply leave the comment section blank and we will match you with the child most in need of sponsorship at that time. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences, but cannot guarantee that you will get the child of your choice.
I AM ALREADY SPONSORING A CHILD. HOW DO I MAKE CHANGES TO MY ACCOUNT?
If you are already sponsoring a child and would like to make any changes to your account (i.e. form of payment, amount of payment, update credit card information, etc.) click here to access your account.
AM I THE ONLY ONE SPONSORING MY CHILD?
$36 a month does not cover all of the programming and services AFE provides to help children escape from the garbage dump. Thus, each child has the opportunity to have two sponsors of $36 a month each. Additionally, AFE partners with the World Help Organization which has its own program of sponsorship and helps support AFE’s operational costs.
IS MY DONATION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?
Yes, AFE partners with a church and non-profit in the United States (Together for Transformation, a ministry of Washington Cathedral in Washington State) which provides a receipt of your tax deductible giving.
CAN I GIVE MY CHILD A GIFT?
AFE’s ministry strategy is to encourage those trapped in poverty to take pride in their work instead of asking for hand-outs. Our sponsorship program is more about the relationship between student and sponsor than about gift-receiving. Additionally, we don’t want some children to feel left out if they do not receive a gift. If you would like to send you child something small (like a picture drawn by one of your children), you can send your child a “gift” that fits in an 8” x 11” envelope.
WHAT IF MY CHILD DROPS OUT AND NO LONGER ATTENDS AFE?
AFE makes every possible effort to keep its children in school. If a child stops coming to classes, he or she receives a home visit and intervention to find out why he or she is not coming and what AFE can do to help. However, sometimes children move. And more often, unfortunately, sometimes children simply drop out of school with their parents’ permission. The Honduran government does not enforce school participation as CPS does in the United States. If you child drops out, AFE alerts the sponsor once it has been decided that the child is not coming back (usually about three months after the child first dropped out and has received home visits). The sponsor is then given the option to sponsor another child or discontinue their sponsorship. The great thing about AFE is that since it is connected with a church (Amor y Vida in the Linda Miller community), often children who have dropped out of school will come back to the church community after a couple years when they have families of their own.
CAN I VISIT MY CHILD?
You can visit your child at the AFE School if you come on a mission trip with AFE. For the safety of the child, AFE does not allow home visits. If you have any questions, please contact Jana Goad.
